Fifth-grade students’ and teachers’ views on psychosocial and school adjustment
Summary:
The present research investigates fifth-grade students’ and teachers’ views about psychosocial and school adjustment in the specific grade, in an attempt to examine the possibility of fifth-grade being a transitional class. Thus far the issue of transition is focused only on pupils attending school of different levels. The literature review identified the changes found in the fifth grade curriculum, the difficulty that the learners experienced while adapting to various school transitions and the student’s positive attitude towards school. The key questions refer to the students' perception of the changes of the fifth grade, their school adaptation, their attitudes towards school, and their teachers’ perceptions. Three hundred twenty two fifth-grade students, completed questionnaires about the comparison between fourth and fifth grade, their school adaptation (Kakavoulis, 1984) and their attitude towards school (preference or avoidance) (Sotiriou & Zafeiropoulou, 2003). In addition, 16 teachers participated in a semi-structured interview. Α mixed method approach was utilized to analyze the data. Results show that the students perceive the changes from fourth to fifth grade in a relatively positive way, and a positive correlation was found between changes and school adaptation. There was also a positive correlation between school adaptation and school pleasure, but a negative one with displeasure. The teachers focused on the changes and the differences between the fifth grade and the previous grades, on the maladaptation of the students during the first trimester, and on the need to establish communication with the parents.
