Researching the school culture and its relationship with leadership in secondary education : the case of Junior High school
Summary:
It is widely acknowledged that both organisational culture and leadership present two of the most crucial factors for the success and effectiveness of any educational organization , as well as for its survival within the wider context. It is additionally advocated that leadership can influence and improve the culture of a school as there seems to exist an interdependence between them. In this light, the main aim of the present dissertation is to investigate both the school culture of the Junior High School ( Gymnasium) and its relation with leadership, and secondly to investigate which leadership characteristics can be attributed to the behaviour of the school principal . The quantitative empirical research records the views and attitudes of teachers (Ν=146) who serve in Junior High Schools in Attica about specific norms and values of culture , about school principal’s behaviour, as well as about the potentiality of the school principal to affect school culture . As far as school culture is concerned, the findings suggest the existence of a rather positive culture with specific features, characterized by a prevailing homogeneity despite minor subcultures. Concerning leadership, the findings suggest that there seems to exist some form of leadership that embodies transformational characteristics , according to the teacher’s views. As for whether the school leader is in the position to influence and shape school culture , the findings support that this is undoubtedly feasible , and it is underpinned that such an effect is possible on the condition of the existence of a ‘vision’ on behalf of the school leader, although it is highlighted that there may be certain barriers and restrictions mainly due to the bureaucratic nature of the Greek educational system.
