The use of tablet device as an educational tool for the audivisual lteracy in preschool education
Summary:
Rapid technological development has completely invaded our lives, affecting directly or indirectly the way we communicate, the way we learn and interact with others. Audiovisual products, in particular, overwhelm our lives and become integrated in the younger generations' daily routine, almost from their day of birth. Children are not only consumers of audiovisual texts such as: ads, news, videos or video games, but also users of new technology devices, which produce a variety of products - multimodal texts - that combine picture and sound. However, familiarity with all of the above does not automatically imply the knowledge of the "language" of moving images and the codices of audiovisual expression. Thus, the pupil’s initiation into audiovisual training and education is more necessary than ever. On this basis, we decided to carry out a case study in a kindergarten class of Attica, where we would use ICT, for the purposes of this diploma thesis. More specifically, our goal was to introduce preschoolers into audiovisual education, through the use of tablet devices. In this way, we expected that students would develop a critical thought concerning audiovisual texts, and they would also understand the concept of the construction and the targeting that is inherent in them, through the creation of their own videos. In order to achieve the objective of the study, we have tried to analyze concepts that made up the audiovisual language, through a clear methodology which involved an organized educational design. The initiation of the students throughout this process appeared to be of particular interest to them. Moreover, through discovering learning and experiential activities, they realized that each audiovisual product is a fabricated reality. At the same time, the concepts of many students on audiovisual expression and communication were differentiated and evolved compared to the ones they had expressed prior to the beginning of this study. Finally, despite our concerns about the use of an attractive technological means, tablets seemed to be an easy-to-use tool for students which having a positive influence on the acquisition of new knowledge.
