Lived experiences of parents of preterm infants
Summary:
The prevalence of preterm births is rising worldwide. Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk of health, developmental and behavioral problems of the child. Parents of preterm infants experience a variety of stressors that affect different aspects of their lives. The purpose of this study was to acquire a deeper understanding of the experiences of preterm infants’ parents that required admission to Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six couples and the data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Four superordinate and 21 subordinate themes emerged concerning the difficulties that the parents faced, the coping mechanisms they employed and the long-term impact of prematurity in their lives.
