Social identity of civil servants in Greece today: social & psychological aspects of ingroup threats
Summary:
This paper investigates the construction and experience of the civil cervants’ social identity particularly within the current socioeconomic context in Greece. The issue is examined from the viewpoint of Social Psychology, as individuals construct their concept of self and their place in the world through the interplay of both social and psychological aspects of life. The social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) has extensively studied the way the individual determines itself based on the social groups it is categorized in, while the theory has been further extended to its implementation in organizations (Mael & Ashforth, 1989, 1992). In this light, the investigation of how the theories in question work in the construction of the civil cervats’ social identity is consired of interest, particularly in the context of the Greek circumstances of today. The paper also examines whether the governmental redundancy measures, which relate to the issue of abolishment of the permanent employment for civil servants, have been experienced as a threat to their identity and have changed their self-image as well as their image of their intergroup. The paper is structured in three chapters. The theoretical framework of basic term and concepts, such as civil servant, permanent employment, redundancy, but also social identity, identity in organizations and identity threats, is presented in the first chapter, while in the second chapter, the methodology of research and its restrictions are analyzed. The third chapter presents and discusses the qualitative data collected and in the conclusions the general findings of the research are summarised and related to the theoretical framework.
