The peripheral nerve block in upper limb procedures
Introduction-Background: This thesis concerns the peripheral nerve block in upper limb procedures. The peripheral nerve block consists of local anesthetic administration to the neural stem aiming at the abolition of sensation in a particular part of the body such as the upper limb.
Aim: The purpose of the current literature review is to analyze the peripheral nerve block approaches of the upper limb and, in particular, to the most frequently used techniques for brachial plexus blocks, which are the interscalene, the supraclavicular and the axillary block.
Methodology: For the realization of this thesis a research on various medical databases, such as Pubmed and certificated medical textbooks, was conducted.
Results: The nerve block constitutes one of the various ways of regional anaesthesia methods, which hinders the neural impulses transmission to the area which will be blocked. The results of this thesis includes the indications, such as the area which needs to be blocked, the contra-indications, such as the patient’s denial to the realization of the blockage and the complications of the peripheral nerves approaches of the upper limb, such as the pneumothorax.
Conclusions: The knowledge of the anatomic pathway, the localization and the structure of the upper limb and, also, the proper study of the upper limb’s anatomy and the peripheral nervous system’s structure make the block successful. As the local anesthetics constitute the drugs used for the regional anesthesia, their pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicity should be well known. The nurse is the person who aids to the correct handling of the peripheral nerve block of the upper limb.
