Summary:
This essay aims to describe the professional development of a teacher through the planning, implementation and self-evaluation of a series of teaching sessions organised with the following structure (launch phase, explore phase, discuss and summarize phase). In this study 25 year six students participated and were taught about percentages. During the teaching sessions the students used the double number line in order to solve mathematical problems and discuss about them. This practice aims to formulate a framework which supports the students' thinking within the social context of a class. The teacher's self evaluation throughout the planning and implementation of the teaching sessions reveals the challenges that a trainee teacher has to face and proposes relevant teaching practices that aim to develop student's critical thinking. Finally, this study tries to evaluate the students' progress during those teaching sessions.
