The generics market in Greece
Summary:
As a result of the economic crisis and other factors it is observed worldwide a gradual increase in the use of generic medicines, the main goal of which is to reduce pharmaceutical costs. In Greece, the term is mainly used in recent years, although in Europe it is widely known, for decades and in America it has been legally used since 1984. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the market for medicines, in particular the generic market in Greece in recent years.
For this purpose, data on the Greek drug market for the years 2012 to 2016 was processed. The data comes from IQVIA, which specializes in the provision of services to health care and biosciences organizations. The collection of data refers to the total sales of medicines in the Greek market in the years 2012 to 2016.
Data processing showed that the largest volume of sales of generic medicines for the years 2012-2016 have in turn the drugs of the cardiovascular system (C0), the digestive tract and metabolism drugs (A0) and the nervous system (N0) drugs. At the same time, there was an increasing trend in sales of generic medicines. Also, the share of generic drugs in overall drug sales is on the rise, while the share of prototype drugs in total drug sales has a downward trend and there seems to be some degree of substitution between generic and prototype drugs. In addition, the simple regression model estimate showed that the volume of sales of generic drugs significantly translates the volume of total drug sales and affects it positively. Finally, the AR model (1) estimate for all generic medicines revealed that past sales of generic medicines significantly interpret current sales of generic medicines and have a positive effect.
