Burnout in medical and nursing staff of private clinics in Athens
Summary:
Scope of the present essay is the investigation of burnout syndrome in medical and nursing staff of six private clinics in Athens.
For this purpose, a quantitative study was performed using primary data of a convenience sample (N = 387) of medical and nursing staff which was occupied in one of the clinics studied. The questionnaire used for the measurement of the burnout level was the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory and was completed during June-July 2018.
According to the results, 98 out of 387 participants experienced burnout, 19 of them were doctors and 79 were nurses. The nursing staff appeared with statistical significance to be more exhausted and disengaged than the medical. A statistically significant difference in disengagement was observed in the categories of educational level (graduate, postgraduate, PhD holder) and position in the organization (director, deputy director, attending doctor with grade A) for medical staff. In addition, a statistically significant difference in exhaustion was observed in the medical staff working in pediatric department in relation to surgical and pathological ones as well as in the nursing staff working in delivery rooms in relation to pathological department. Medical and nursing staff showed a statistically significant difference in exhaustion and disengagement based on different levels of professional satisfaction. Professional satisfaction turned out to be an important prognostic factor for burnout.
The conclusions are that a low percentage of the medical and nursing staff experiences burnout. Nursing staff appears higher levels of burnout. The educational level and the position in the organization affect burnout for medical staff. Working in the pediatric department for medical staff, working in delivery rooms for nursing staff as well as the level of professional satisfaction affect the professional burnout. It is important measures to be taken for the prevention of the onset of the syndrome which should focus on nursing staff, especially employees in delivery rooms, pediatricians and attending doctors with grade A, as well as investigation to be carried out regarding the factors which define the professional satisfaction of the nursing and medical staff.
