Trace metals (Cu, Ni, Zn) in water and sediments from Saronikos Gulf
Summary:
This thesis took place at the Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry of the University of Athens. The goal of this thesis was to study the charge of Saronikos Gulf and Elefsis Gulf seawater by heavy metals( Cu, Ni, Fe, Mn, Zn). These metals were examined in sampling during of March, September and October of 2017 at specific positions in the Gulf of Elefsis and in the Inner and Outer Saronikos. The sampling stations which were chosen are representative for the impact of industrial coastal zone to the levels of heavy metals. We investigated the effect of polluting coastal industries and the spatial and time variation of heavy metals. All seawater collected data were statistically processed with the SPSS software. The main results in the water column are presented in this thesis. Generally, we have observed higher concentrations of metals in the coastal industrial zone and a decrease of levels toward the Outer Saronikos. Also, were examined a few surface sendiments to study the pollution status. Finally we investigated the temporal evolution trend in dissolved and particulate metal concentrations in Elefsis Gulf and in representative stations of Inner and Outer Saronikos.
