HIV and non Hodgkin lymphoma
Summary:
Patients with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency
Syndrome) are more likely to develop haematological cancers compare to the rest of the
population. Lymphomas represent the most frequent malignancy among patients with
HIV/AIDS, especially non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Since the introduction of HAART (Highly Active
Antiretroviral Therapy) in 1996, mortality rates of HIV-related lymphomas has not changed
massively and this is due to the presence of immunodeficiency caused by AIDS that can render
antiretroviral therapy less efficient as well as other factors. This dissertation focuses on the
different types of non-Hodgkin lymphomas that generally occur in HIV patients with a focus
on pathology, epidemiology, pathogenesis and their clinical characteristics. A comprehensive
understanding of the intricacies of HIV coinfection and the latest therapies used to treat HIVNHL
can lead to additional advances in the management of these disorders.
