Summary:
The present dissertation focuses initially on a bibliographical overview and subsequently on a survey. More specifically, it is divided in two parts: the first part, the theoretical one, is also divided in two units. The first unit approaches the definition, the origin, the modern description of the term “deponent verbs” in Greek and in foreign languages and “deponency” as a morphological irregularity and in correlation with transitivity. The second unit is a bibliographical review of school textbooks and scientific manuals of Modern Greek language and grammar. To be exact, a review of grammar books and Greek language manuals is attempted, which concerns deponent verbs and their syntactic role as well as the types of syntax (active/passive). The second part, the research one, refers to the monitoring conducted in the 11th grade of the 40th High School of Athens during my Greek language lessons, the quantitative and qualitative results of the monitoring and a discussion of these results after this phenomenon has been taught to these classes. The aim of the research in these classes is to note our students’ initial ability to recognize the syntactically wrong use of deponent verbs, to convert sentences with deponent verbs from passive to active voice and vice versa and to assess any possible improvement of the students’ performance which would prove deep understanding of the phenomenon after it has been taught to them.
