Summary:
ABSTRACT

The present post-graduate paper focuses on the fact that education is a workplace where the numerical superiority of women has not been matched by equal distribution of authority on an administrative level. Administration in education remains a male-dominated area. The purpose of this research is to investigate the views of teachers on gender inequalities in the administration of primary education and to explore the factors that lead to under-representation of women in the educational administrative hierarchy.
The methodological tool that was used was a questionnaire through which quantitative data were utilized. The questionnaire included closed-type questions to explore the issue of the presence of the two genders in educational administration. The questionnaire was completed by 219 female teachers, working in Primary Education of A΄ Athens in the Prefecture of Attica.
The results of this research showed that contribution to education is listed as the main reason for pursuing an administrative position, whereas family responsibilities and fear of workload are considered by the majority of the female teachers as the main reasons for female underrepresentation in the educational administration.
