Summary:
Introduction-Background: The last decades it is observed a significant increase in educational interventions about cautiousness of health care providers regarding prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP). Therefore, the main task is about the choice of the appropriate protocol for oral hygiene care in order to reduce the incidence of VAP.
Aim: The purpose of the present systematic review is the research of impact of oral hygiene in VAP prevention.
Methodology: Literature published between March 2018 and May 2018 was researched using Pubmed with chronicle criterion the last 5 years. The research occurred through all levels of evidence. The key words: «ventilator associated pneumonia», «oral hygiene», «oral care», «oral decontamination», «mechanical ventilation», and «impact» researched as part of the title, abstract or entire article.
Results: Oral hygiene care leads to reduction of hazard and incidence of VAP. In addition, this is associated with shorter durations of ventilation and intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Result of the above is the drecrease of healthcare cost and mortality.
Conclusions: Determination of protocols and adoption of practices in order to provide and preserve oral hygiene are imperative for improvement of patients’ health and best management of health economics.
