An Investigation of the impact on the Burnout Syndrome among Health Professionals due to financial crisis
Summary:
ABSTRACT
Background: Burnout consists a significant issue for public health, since it is associated with health workers’ productivity, as well as with their mental and physical well-being. Health system reforms and economical changes promote the development of burnout.
Aim: To investigate the effect of the health system’s economical crisis and of the reduction in health professionals’ income on their burnout symptoms.
Methods: This study was carried out on 80 health professionals, through the administration of self-reported questionnaires. These assessments included sociodemographic data, three Likert type scales measuring the effect of crisis on the health system (0-5), a scale measuring the effect of crisis on their own health status (0-5) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory, a 22 item questionnaire measuring burnout, leading to three subscales (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment).
Results: The negative effects on the quality of the services provided was associated with higher emotional exhaustion (p=0.001) and depersonalization (p=0.018). The negative effect on health system’s function was associated with emotional exhaustion (p=0.007). Believing that health workers’ productivity is reduced due to the crisis was associated with emotional exhaustion (p=0.002) and depersonalization (p=0.000). Negative effects on the health workers’ salaries were associated with emotional exhaustion (p=0.006).
Conclusions: A stronger belief concerning the negative effect of the crisis on the health system, as well as on personal earnings was associated with higher burnout. Yet, no significant effect was recorded on personal accomplishment, indicating that it is not influenced by the effect of economical crisis.
