Guidelines for referral to speech and language evaluation for children aged 4:6-6:6
Summary:
Speech and language difficulties seem to concern a significant percentage of children attending kindergarten (McLeod, S. & Harrison, L., 2009, Wallace, I.C., 2015). Early identification of infants experiencing such difficulties is necessary as research has shown how these difficulties are associated with difficulties in cognitive development and academic success (Jacob, S., 2013). Early and appropriate intervention in the case of children with speech and language difficulties produces positive results in their linguistic development (Farber, J. & Klein, E., 1999, Hilbert, D. & Eis, S., 2014). The aim of this project is to create a guide for speech therapy referral for students from 4;6 to 6;6 years old that will be a very useful tool for preschool educators. Through a speech and language screening test, based on the theoretical background of children’s language development, the teacher is intended to be able to identify students who may be experiencing such difficulties and refer them to speech therapists. The screening test was initially examined 12 randomly selected students who attended public kindergartens in Piraeus to identify and correct any mistakes in the process. After the adaptation of the test, 62 infants who attended public and private kindergartens in Piraeus and Athens during the school year 2017-2018 were examined. The scoring system was modelled so that the highest score a student could score is 100 points. As a minimum acceptable score for children aged 4;6 to 5;6 years were defined as 78 points and for children 5;7 to 6;6 were defined as 80 points. A rating lower than the above is considered to indicate that the infant should be referred to a logo therapeutic assessment. After two weeks, two formal evaluation tests were administered to the children of the sample and their results compared with those of the screening test. The questions asked were: a) What is the probability that children who, according to the screening test, need speech therapy, do need speech therapy and b) What is the probability that children who do not need a speech therapy according to the screening test do not really need intervention . According to the comparison of the results the sensitivity of the detection test was 0.92 and the specificity 0.84, values confirming the accuracy of the test for the sample of the study. For the reliability of the screening test, Cronbach's alpha statistic was used at 0.73, which was judged to be satisfactory. Finally, for the validation test, the results of the sample children were compared to the screening test with their results in the formal speech assessment tests and an agreement rate of 90.3% was found.
