Folktales about strong women: Educational program in primary school education regarding the deconstruction of gender stereotypes in folktales
Summary:
Folktales are important pedagogical resources and educational tools. However, over the last decades, since the second wave feminism they have received criticism that promote gender stereotypes and reproduce social inequalities at the expense of women.
The present educational programme aims at deconstructing gender stereotypes existing in folktales through the teaching of stories that belong to the oral folk tradition- not widely known- at the Primary Education. These folktales present heroes and heroines cooperating, having equal roles and giving different behavior patterns regarding the two sexes.
Through storytelling, experiential activities, intergenerational approach and cooperative methods of teaching, 6th grade pupils approach, become acquainted with and diffuse to their family, school and social environment an aspect of folktales, unknown to many.
