Psychological evaluation of children and adolescents with obesity
Summary:
Introduction: Childhood and adolescent obesity is one of the most important diseases worldwide, with rates in Greece being particularly high. Child obesity has a significant impact on the physical health of patients, such as cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, while also affecting the psychological health of children.
Aim: The aim of the present study is the effect approach of the childhood and adolescent obesity on the mental health of the patients, as well as the presentation of methods for assessing these problems.
Methodology: We search at the electronic database Pubmed, Scopus and Google Scholar for relevant articles using variants of the terms: ‘childhood obesity’, ‘psychological assessment’, ‘psychological consequences’ and then we carried out a qualitative evaluation of these articles.
Results: The results showed that childhood and adolescent obesity is associated with a significant number of psychosocial problems, such as body image disorder - physical discontent, reduced self-esteem, anxiety and depressive disorders, and perhaps more importantly the onset of eating disorders. These problems appear to a large extent in the sufferers but are often overlooked in the management of childhood obesity, although they may adversely affect their quality of life.
Conclusions: The psychological implications of obesity are a particular aspect of the consequences of child obesity, so their treatment is vital. The management of childhood obesity must be a multifactorial process in which both physical and psychological impacts are to be addressed, and parents and a competent interdisciplinary team (pediatrician, nutritionist, psychologist) are required. Techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can greatly help in the management of childhood obesity.
