Pedagogical Concepts of Leo Tolstoy and Their Recruitment in Greece (1910-1920)
Summary:
In the history of literary and philosophical thought, Leon Tolstoy left his own mark. Although he is best known as a novelist, he has also systematically dealt with problems in Philosophy, Pedagogy, Religion, Ethics and others. After the spiritual crisis, which led to the revision of his earlier perceptions and the adoption of a new system of values and a new bio-theory, he focused on Pedagogical Science and bequeathed to us his pedagogical perceptions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of Tolstoy's pedagogical concepts in Greece in the period 1910-1920. During this period, the most systematic effort was made to reorganize and reform the Greek educational system, as part of the general urban modernization program, which the Greek government of Venizelos attempted. The founding of the Educational Group in 1910 (the year of Tolstoy's death) is the most obvious evidence of the wider reflection within the Greek intellectual world about the problems of the existing education system and the necessary reorientation.
