Indentification of factors that favor the apppearance of ulcer pressures to hospitalised patients in general clinics and intensive care units
Summary:
Introduction
The pressure ulcers are one of the most common chronic illnesses observed in patients hospitalized in hospitals. Their incidence varies from country to country and ranges from 4 to 17%.
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that lead to the occurrence of the pressure ulcers.
Material and Method
This is a prospective observational study. The sample of the study consisted of 239 patients hospitalized at the Athenian General Hospital "KAT" and they were bedridden. In particular, patients who were hospitalized in the pathological department, surgical departments, orthopedics and intensive care unit (ICU) were selected. For data collection a specific registration form was used. Data analysis was performed with the statistical package Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) ver.24 .

Results
From the 239 participants, 72.8% (n = 174) were men, while 27.2% (n = 65) were women. The middle age of the participants was 59.82 ± 13.23 years. For the purposes of the analysis, the so-called non-high-frequency incidence was categorized into one category (Other Points). There was no statistically significant relationship between the pressure ulcer and nationality, age, days of hospitalization, systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, and patient's mode of transport. In addition, the cause of entry, the medical clinic , the inotropic medication, the diet of the patients, and the relationship between the location of the ulcer and the mobility of the patients showed no statistically significant relationship between the variables (p-value> 0.05). In contrast, there was a statistically significant relationship between the pressure ulcer and the patient's sex and the associated patients' disease (p-value <0.05).
Conclusions
The education of patients suffering from pressure ulcers is an integral part of disease prevention and treatment strategies.
