Ο λειτουργικός ρόλος του Προοιμίου στην τρίτη δημηγορία του Περικλέους: από τους ῥητορικούς τόπους στους ῥητορικούς τρόπους
Translated title:
The functional role of the Prooemium of the third periclean speech: from the rhetoric topoi to the rhetoric tropoi
Summary:
The present dissertation aims at a rhetorical analysis of the Prooemium (Exordium) of the third Periclean speech (2.60-4) according to the Neo-Aristotelian Method of Rhetorical Criticism in order to present its functional role. The analysis is divided into two parts: the Contextual Rhetorical Analysis and the Textual Rhetorical Analysis. The Contextual Rhetorical Analysis examines the extra-linguistic context of the speech, whereas the Textual Rhetorical Analysis examines the speech itself by means of the five Canons of Aristotle’s Ars Rhetorica. Only three canons of the opera oratoris (ἔργα τοῦ ῥήτορος) are examined, viz. Inventio, Dispositio, and Elocutio. The Image Restoration Strategies employed by Pericles for the restoration of his public image are also studied. The concise analysis of the remaining speech focuses on Inventio, and particularly on topoi ((loci argumentorum) – common topoi (loci communes) and special topoi – used by Pericles in his attempt to develop his argumentation. Conclusions are deduced concerning the speaker’s Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, the number and the distribution of topoi, the connection between the Methods of Persuasion and the subjects set in the Prooemium, the Image Restoration Strategies, the functionality of the Prooemium and the effectiveness of the speech. In the Appendix II a didactic scenario entitled “Smite, but hear me: a speech before a hostile audience” presents the way a public apologetic speech before a hostile audience should be approached and analyzed.
