The LH IIIC pottery in Cilicia
Summary:
This essay deals with the LH IIIC ceramics identified in the Cilicia region. The aim of the work is to record all available LH IIIC pots and create a single catalogue. Also, the purpose of the thesis is to examine the importance of the appearance of this type of ceramics in the context of population movements at the end of the LBA and the written sources of the EIA from Cilicia.
The study is structured into two basic modules. In the first, some inscriptions that refer to the area of Cilicia are broken down into two sections. The first is the inscriptions that have been found in the area of Cilicia and which refer to the Hiyawa kingdom. The second part discusses the terms used to these inscriptions, such as the term Hiyawa and the name of Muksu.
The second module is divided into three sections. The first one presents the sites of Cilicia in which Mycenaean pottery has been found. In each position a brief introduction is made to the stratigraphy of the position in the transition from the LBA to the EIA and the levels in which LH IIIC pottery has been excavated. Subsequently, the LH IIIC pottery in each site is analyzed based on the catalogue that was created. Finally, in the settlement of Tarsus and Kazanli, where the majority of LH IIIC vessels have been identified, contacts with other regions are also being discussed through the analysis of the style, shape and petrographic analysis of the vases. The second section briefly analyzes the production of local pottery classes in each settlement. The third section analyzes the importance of the presence of LH IIIC ceramics in Cilicia. The basic theoretical models that have been applied to neighboring areas where LH IIIC ceramics appeared are interpreted.
Based on the above-mentioned data analyzed in the work, the appearance of LH IIIC ceramics in Cilicia seems to have been a cut in the pottery production of the area, but this did not affect the whole region, but mainly the area of Tarsus. Their presences, coupled with the reference to Hiyawa’s kingdom, are important signs for the arrival in the area of population groups, probably from the Aegean area.
