Quantitative and qualitative assessment of spelling accuracy and spelling strategies of typically developed 6th grade students
Summary:
Aim of the present study was the quantitative and qualitative assessment of Greek typically developed 6th grade students' spelling accuracy in lexical morphemes and derivational suffixes. Also, the aim was the assessment of spelling accuracy in these morphemes by gender. Moreover, we examined the spelling strategies that students use and which of them contributes to greater spelling accuracy. The participants were 58 typically developed 6th graders (30 males and 28 females). A spelling task with 69 words from the elementary' s school books was used. The words were divided into morphemes and the spelling accuracy in lexical morphemes, derivational suffixes and their exceptions were assessed. Also, a qualitative analysis of spelling errors was conducted. At last, we conducted a structured interview in order to record, through self-reports, the spelling strategies that students chose to write 14 target-words from the previous spelling task.
The results indicated that the students struggle more with the derivational suffixes than with the lexical morphemes and that the boys performed poorly in spelling compared to girls. The qualitative analysis of spelling errors indicated that the students perform poorly when choose the most common graphemes. With respect to the spelling strategies, sixth graders seemed to make greater use of the morphological strategy, when spelling the words as a whole and the lexical morphemes, but they used the mnemonic strategy, when spelling the derivational suffixes. The less effective strategy seemed to be the invention and the performance in spelling the derivational suffixes correlates with the use of analogy, phonological and visuo-orthographic strategy.
