The emotional, behavioral and social characteristics of siblings and parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Summary:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder,
with an impact on the quality of life of the individual with ASD, as well as on
family members. Families face challenges, on the other hand they can become
more resilient. This present research investigated the emotional, behavioral and
social characteristics of parents and typical developmental siblings (TD) with
children with ASD. In addition, it examined other characteristics of parents and
siblings, parents’ satisfaction from their family, and sibling relationships from
the side of both siblings and parents. 21 families (N=62), 21 mothers, 20 fathers
and 21 TD siblings participated in this research. Parents completed:
demographics, FSS, Self-Perception Profile for Adults, PSI-SF, DASS-21 and
SIB for siblings. TD siblings completed: demographics, PATEM I/II/III/IV, SDQ
and SPQ for the sibling relationships. According to the statistical analysis, the
majority of parents and TD siblings showed positive adjustment, normal level of
parental stress, especially moderate to high satisfaction from their family,
satisfactory in the sibling relationships between TD child and the sibling with
ASD. It should not be ignored the small percentage of fathers (10%) and mothers
(14%) who have experienced clinically significant parental stress in their parental
role for the child with ASD and mothers with severe negative emotional status.
There has also been a very small number of TD children with behavioral
problems, hyperactivity, problems with peers, but also with emotional
difficulties. Significant positive and negative correlations were found between
the variables. The survey presented interesting findings and provided an overall
insight of the families with children with ASD. Limitations and future
suggestions should be taken into consideration.
