Social Anxiety Disorder in Children of 6th Grade
Summary:
Social anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive fear of negative evaluation. The specific disorder can be manifested to adults as well as to children and teenagers. The purpose of this study is to investigate social anxiety disorder as manifested in children of the 6th grade of primary school. The sample consisted of 123 students of primary school, 52 girls and 71 boys, aged 11 years old. A questionnaire was used to collect the data, including the Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Disorders tool (SCARED), the Severity Measurement for Social Anxiety Disorder scale and certain demographic questions. The results of the survey showed that 1.6% of the sample had severe social anxiety disorder and 11.4% moderate. It was also found that 93.8% of the children with social anxiety disorder had at the same time another anxiety disorder as well. Finally, girls were found to have social anxiety disorder on a greater degree than boys and that correlation exists between mother's education and the occurrence of child's social anxiety disorder. Restriction of research is considered to be the limited sample and as future research is concerned, a study investigating the social anxiety disorder in several child ages is suggested.
