Self-efficacy and Cognitive-Emotional Strategies in College and High-school students
Summary:
During adolescence a series of significant changes occur in physical, psychological, social and emotional sector field. These changes in the adolescent’s life form a fertile ground for depression making him vulnerable in stressful situation. Besides, depression and stress often constitute two comorbid mental disorders during adolescence. Τhe adolescent’s regulation of negative emotions in stressful events can act protectively concerning the occurrence of depressive symptoms. In the present study is being investigated the adolescents’ self-efficacy level and the use of cognitive emotion strategies when they cope with stressful situations. Also, the research investigated the correlation of cognitive emotion strategies that adolescents use with their self-efficacy level. Our sample consisted of 260 students of Secondary Schools and High-Schools in Piraeus. A questionnaire was used to collect data, which included Self-Efficacy Scale, Cognitive Emotions Regulation Scale and demographical items. The research findings showed that self-efficacy is positively related to student’s school performance and hobbies. Concerning the cognitive emotion strategies, both High-School’s students and Secondary School’s students use inappropriate cognitive emotion strategies showing that boys are more capable in managing negative emotions. The correlations are also by the demographics of the research. My study aims, if possible, to underline the need for prevention programs of adolescent depression and stimulate future research for an alarmingly increasing mental disorder in adolescents, such as depression.
