Summary:
The history of Callicounis distillery in Kalamata from the end of the 19th century to the 20th century
Callicounis distillery, is a family centered business founded in the middle 19th century that is dedicated to traditional and authentic recipes. The business is based in Kalamata the regional center of Southern Greece. The company was founded in 1850 at a time when there was mainly mechanized processing and not a developed industry in Greece. More specifically, during the early years the wine and spirits industry was slowly expanding and only experienced faster growth towards the end of the 19th century. In the second generation of Callicounis family thanks to Nikolaos Callicounis, the Distillery became established both in the local market and abroad. Domestic expansion of the wine and spirits industry was based on a sudden increase in the supply of cheap raw materials thanks to raisins that remained unsold due to the sudden Greek raisin crisis. Due to this in the 1860s, other factories were also established in Kalamata and grew rapidly, especially towards the end of the 19th century, due to the processing of the black fruit that is the raisin. In the last few years of the 19th century, the distillery, the beverage industry and the winery flourished in the prosperous city of Kalamata. Within this context, the Callicounis business now in the hands of Nikolaos Callicounis built a great reputation both inside Greece and abroad through practices of extroversion, participation and awards in international competitions. This exemplary company based its success on its commitment to traditional and authentic recipes passed from one generation to another. Its family character allowed the company to adapt to a changing economic environment, ensured its longevity and focused the business on sustainable growth over many years.
