Tumuli in the Peloponnese during the transitional MH-LH period
Summary:
A tumulus can be described as a peculiar type of structure. It is basically a manmade round hill, which covers and indicates the presence of a singular or a group of tombs. This type of cemetery was introduced in Greece during the end of the third millennium. The first half of the second millennium is the peak of the phenomenon, when most of the tumuli where built and used. The premises of the Mycenaean Civilization are indicated by many social and cultural mutations that seems to reflate to the funerary architecture. In time no more tumuli were built although some of them in some areas continued to be used.
The main purpose of this essay is to cover the main characteristics of the phenomenon and the reasons of its continuation during the transitional period. The wider area of the Peloponnese where were discovered the most sites and where the so-called “prepalatial mycenean civilization” appeared, will be the focus. The first part, consist of an introduction to the history of the research (from the 19th c. till the 21st c.) and a concise review of the main archaeological “school of thought” concerning the funerary customs. It also encompass a chapter concerning the possible origins of the phenomenon, its evolution and diffusion in the Helladic mainland. The main body of our work consist of the overview of the sites, cemeteries, tombs and finds of the Peloponnese. The third part contains a synthesis of the available data concerning the evolution of the tumulus organization, the architectural forms and burial finds. Finally the conclusions of the essays will cover the subject of the importance of the tumulus in the Helladic society.
