The institution of arranged marriage: experiences of women in the Greek countryside
Summary:
Marriage constitutes one of the most important decisions in people's lives. Thus, various empirical studies have been conducted by examining its multifactorial impact worldwide (historical-culturally, legally, ceremonially, psycho-sociologically). However, little research has been conducted referring exclusively to the female population married by arranged marriage, particularly in the Greek countryside. This paper investigates qualitatively the experiences, the thoughts and the perceptions of these women, both with regard to the individual matching practices, as well as, their wider beliefs that arise from their gender and social role. Moreover, it is also attempted the investigation of the emotional content that emerges within the marital relationship, regardless the type of marital union (love vs arranged marriage).
In this light, it was selected the qualitative research method with the use of nine semi-structured in-depth interviews which were analyzed based on the Thematic Analysis. The research data showed that for all but one of the participants, the wedding practices that were followed they were identical, with the relatives meddling in the interviewees' lives. However, for seven out of the nine protagonists, the long-lasting investment in the relationship contributed to the formation of feelings of love, thus, marriage satisfaction. It is estimated that the results of the current study contribute to a sounder and deeper understanding of the experiences of these women in the light of their social, emotional and individual aspirations. Finally, it is suggested that a more in-depth examination of the above-mentioned should be carried by conducting a longitudinal study.
