Summary:
The author’s personal involvement with the percussion, in particular with the musical instrument of his own homeland, the defi, for the past twenty years has been the trigger to research and record the historical facts that related to the instrument as well as the biography and course one of the most well-known music players in the field. This paper presents a synopsis of the literature on the musical tradition of Epirus, the folk musical instruments and the analysis of the rhythmic wealth of Greece. The above aspects of our study stand as the first pillar of our paper.
The second pillar of our essay was the approach of teaching defi through personal contact and apprenticeship next to an experienced and acclaimed active musician, such as Spyros Alevrontas, focusing on how he understands and attempts to convey to one apprentice his art. From the oral tradition and the theory of the instrument we tried to go into the conditions of the lesson and imprint the information, the knowledge and the way it is transmitted by a practical musician to the student.
The Epirotic Defi has always been an instrument that played a secondary and accompanying role within a musical band. The study and processing of the resulting data brought to light issues through another visual, centered on this "secondary" musical instrument and helping its escape from the obscurity of the past. All of the above comes to clarify the perception with which it is dealt, its "speech" in the region of Epirus and its role through the approach of apprenticeship next to an experienced practical musician. To enlighten the enormous rhythm wealth of the region, to preserve, to propagate and to develop the technique of an instrument by trying to record the repertoire, its style and its identity.
