Nature of Science (NOS) in chemistry school textbooks and in Lyceum students' views
Summary:
In this master thesis we study the representation of the Nature of Science (NOS) in secondary school chemistry textbooks, as well as the ideas developed by the students of a experimental High School about NOS. Concerning in school textbooks, we present an evaluation method used by similar international studies, which has been adopted and adapted to the Greek context. Essentially, at first, we studied the concept of NOS, the myths about this concept and the aspects of NOS that they can be evaluated. In a second stage, the chemistry textbooks were evaluated about NOS on the basis of eleven aspects and presented the results of the evaluation. We found a set of representations (114), the majority of which are contained in the book of the 12th grade. Also, the majority of representations represent the "empirical" aspect of NOS and "social and cultural embeddedness of science". It is noteworthy that not all aspects of NOS are incorporated into all evaluated chemistry textbooks. Then, using questionnaires and through content analysis of the answers, the ideas developed by students of an Experimental Lyceum have been revealed and they are mainly characterized as not informed. Finally, we present the degree of correlation between the representation of an aspect of NOS in textbooks and students' views of this aspect. At this point, we noticed that the views of students reflect the representation of the "empirical" aspect of NOS. Therefore, students understanding of NOS and the development of informed views in order to prepare scientifically literate students who, as citizens, will be able to participate in a public debate on science issues and receive well documented decisions on personal and social issues related to science is maintained as an educational goal.
