The effects of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder on parents quality of life.
Summary:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) seems to affect the family members of the diagnosed child and specifically the parents. Although previous researchers have shown high interest about ASD area and have indicated the impact of having an autistic child on physical and psychological parents’ health, the latter has not been explored with the use of mixed methodology, nor by the combination of many different factors. The present study aimed to quantitatively examine the factors of stress, depression, social support and job satisfaction correlates of to the quality of life of parents with children with ASD. At the same time, the study aimed to qualitatively explore the impact of ASD on the quality of life of parents, but also on the possible benefits of counseling in the school context. The methodology involved mixed methods design. Five questionnaires were administered to fifty-eight participants, and the data were analyzed through multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Also, four semi-structured interviews were analyzed through the Interpretation Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The findings indicated no significant results between the factors and parents’ quality of life. In turn, the qualitative analysis showed two major themes that highlighted the negative impact of ASD on the physical and psychological level of parents’ quality of life and the importance of counseling in schools. Accordingly, the statistical findings of the current study did not coincide with those of previous studies. However, the qualitative findings agreed with those of previous research and provided additive knowledge in the domain of school counseling, with certain implications for future research and practice.
