Summary:
Basil the Great as one of the most important hierarchs of the Church, was glorified and praised by important hymnographers and composers who delivered masterpieces of hymnography and psaltic art. Hymnography embellished the Saint with hymns, many of which have been preserved to this day in worship, while others in manuscripts and anecdotes.
This paper attempts a presentation of all the material (published and unpublished) concerning Saint Basil and his feast. It presents his life, his manifold work and his feast in the Orthodox Church, through information provided by theological sources. Next, all the hymnography that was created in order to praise the Great Hierarch. The hymnographic poems are presented according to poetic forms and cover all periods of evolution of the hymnography from the 5th century to the 20th and, furthermore, biographical references of hymnographers are reported. Then, an attempt is made to literally analyze the hymnography that is being chanted today at Saint Basil the Great feast.
Finally, all chants of St. Basil feast are recorded in musical codes and the first printed musical books. The works of each composer for Saint Basil and their biography, from the 13th century after the recovery of Constantinople from the Franks to the 19th century with the change of notation and the New Method, are presented in detail. There is also a comparative morphological analysis of the mathema «Ὦ θεία καί ἱερά τῆς Χριστοῦ ἐκκλησίας μέλισσα» as composed by Anapardas, Manuel Chrysaphes, Kosmas Iviritis the Macadonian and Petros Bereketis, with the intention to to indicate the evolution of Byzantine Liturgical Chant through centuries.
The presentation of the entire hymnography and the chants concerning Saint Basil the Great, goes through the fields of ecclesiastical literature, hymnography and psaltic art, in order to provide an epitome of the most important hymns and compositions praising the Great Hierarch .
