Attitudes towards mental health illness and occupational burnout of mental health professionals: the effect of emotional intelligence and life satisfaction on burnout syndrome
Summary:
The present study was conducted in order to analyze the occupational burnout effects and the conceptions of mental health professionals concerning severe mental illness. The study examined both the relation and the effect of socio-demographic factors and professional characteristics of the sample on the aforementioned issues. In addition, the predictive value of attitudes towards severe mental illness, as well as of life satisfaction and emotional intelligence were examined in predicting the appearance of occupational burnout symptoms. Also, the mediating effect of emotional intelligence in the correlation of the aforementioned attitudes with the occupational burnout were analyzed. The sample consisted of 206 mental health professionals in total, of whom 92 were men and 114 were women. These were psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers, in public and private sector or in both of them. The examined variables were assessed using a questionnaire of socio-demographic factors, constructed for the study, and the scales: «Attitudes of Severe Mental Illness scale (ASMI)», the «Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-HSS-MP)», the «Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF)» and the «Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS)». From the results it was shown that higher levels of occupational burnout are correlated with more negative attitudes towards the mental illness. Women held more positive attitudes in comparison with men, who scored higher in occupational burnout subscale of depersonalization. Older participators showed lower scores in occupational burnout and held more positive attitudes towards mental illness. As far as the profession is concerned, social workers and nurses seem to hold more negative attitudes and higher levels of occupational burnout in comparison with psychologists and psychiatrists. Working in private sector is associated with less positive attitudes and higher levels of occupational burnout, while working less than a year in the current work position is associated with more positive attitudes. In conclusion, the study confirmed the predictive effect of the examined variables on the asset of occupational burnout symptoms as well as the positive correlation with the emotional intelligence in the field of mental health. To sum up, the mediating effect of emotional intelligence was found to be significant on the correlation of the aforementioned attitudes with the occupational burnout.
