The city of Athens at the beginning of the Period of Transformations (late 6th to 7th century AD)
Summary:
This essay seeks to study and interpret material remains found in the area of Athens from the late 6th century to the 7th century AD, as well as sources that date back to this period and are related to Athens. Its aim is to prove the uninterrupted presence of life in the city during this period. The essay begins with a brief historical overview of the period, having as point of reference the position of Athens in the Byzantine Empire. Next, it considers the sources, which are divided in literary and epigraphical. The former includes texts related to 7th-century Athens, while the latter are found in the city of Athens, with one of them dating to 693 and being the only safe chronological evidence based on the existing publications. The fortification walls surrounding the city with their various dating interpretations are also examined, in order to ascertain which one protected it during the period under study. At the same time, an attempt is made to reconstruct the city’s urban plan, considering the Post-Herulian Wall as a boundary. Three exclusively residential areas included within and outside the wall are presented in greater detail. Their dating was based on ceramics and coins found in building debris, while at the same time, the water supply study helps us better define the residential complexes. Various types of workshops that appear to occupy spaces that had lost their previous use due to various changes are analyzed in the corresponding section, while the position of most of them is placed outside the Post-Herulian Wall. These workshops are distinguished by kilns, olive presses, water-mills, and laundry establishment. Additionally, this essay attempts to present the places of worship, while at the same time a division is made between pre-existing churches, newly erected churches, and those that resulted from the conversion of the ancient sanctuaries into churches. The architectural sculptures constitute an additional issue of this study, providing yet further testimony with respect to building activity in the city. Finally, the cemeteries developed inside and outside the walls are approached by adding pertinent information about the city’s topographical evolution.
