This thesis undertakes a detailed study of the sphinx from Egypt, the ancient Near East and the Aegean with regards to its evolution and development and also artistic characteristics in chronological order. By examining the artistic features of the sphinx in the Eastern Mediterranean makes it easier to understand the emergence and development of both the Minoan and Mycenaean sphinx.
