First-time directors in the arena of the ancient tragedy during the period 2010-2017
Summary:
The revival of the ancient Greek tragedy in Greece began in the 19th century, while its systematic presentation began with the official establishment of the Epidaurus Festival in 1955. In the past the attempt to approach the ancient drama focused mainly on the literary-textual domain and not on the iconic- . Moreover, there was no particular focus on theatrical performances except those that used the original language of the work, ie ancient Greek, rather than translations. Since then, however, there has been intense activation in the research field of ancient drama focusing on the dramatic elements. This effort is also called for to strengthen the present work, which deals with performances of ancient drama of the last decade examining the directional approach chosen for each project. The starting point of this effort was the reflection on the "respect" of ancient drama by contemporary directors, and whether this "respect" can provide artistic freedom for expression, without diminishing the importance and influence of his own drama.
