The plague in Venetian Crete (14th -17th c.)
Summary:
This thesis concerns the overall phenomenon of plague epidemics in Venetian Crete from the 14th to the end of the 17th century, in the context of the study of the corresponding phenomena in European historiography. Crete constitutes a privileged field of plague studies, as it was one of the most prominent Venetian bases and a significant trade center in the eastern Mediterranean, the extensive trade networks of which rendered it vulnerable to constant invasions of the disease. On the other hand, the inclusion of the island in the Venetian administrative system provided it with a well organized health service mechanism that was under a constant development and systematization, a mechanism absent in the regions adjacent to Crete, which had escaped the venetian control.
In particular, the phenomenon of plague epidemics is examined in the epidemiological conjunction with the corresponding phenomena which occurred frequently in the wider region of the eastern Mediterranean, in an attempt to investigate their relations, to compare their tensions and, as far as possible, to monitor their respective paths. Furthermore, we present the development of the mechanisms that have been set up in order to confront the plague epidemics and attempt to evaluate their effectiveness. In addition, the role of the lazarettos and their specific mode of operation, is being under investigation since it was exclusively related to the plague. Moreover, considering the intensiveness and the duration of the plague of the years 1592-95 in Candia, the last chapter is dedicated to an attempt to provide a detailed portrayal of a society during the scourge of plague, to examine the ways the disease affected the everyday life and eventually, the efforts that had been made, from both the venetian mechanisms and the Cretan society, to face the crisis and restore the order in the city.
This thesis begins with the investigation of the biological identity of the plague, which enables us to realize the specific conditions under which it is developed, the frequency of its occurrences and the degree of its morbidity. Finally, the evolutionary course followed by the medical thought will be briefly presented in an attempt to understand the plague as well as reference will be made to over the individual practices that physicians used to cure the disease.
