The evaluation of teachers 'knowledge in the management of acute seizures in schools
Summary:
INTRODUCTION: Among non-communicable diseases, epilepsy is the most well-known chronic brain disorder that occurs globally, affecting 50 million people of all age groups. Recurrent seizures occurring mainly in children often cause accidents, so teachers' knowledge on how to respond to seizures at schools is crucial to ensure a safe academic environment. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the teachers' knowledge on how to deal with children with seizures in the school environment and the contribution of a training program on gaining more experience at handling a seizure at school.
METHODOLOGY: The survey was semi-experimental, and included 542 teachers of elementary, junior high and high schools of Athens, both public and private. The training seminar included introductory concepts for epilepsy and seizures, criteria for recognizing emergency situations and a practical skills seminar on dealing with a child with seizures. The first questionnaire used before the intervention included questions about demographics, teachers' knowledge and attitudes, as well as questions about any previous training on first aid. The second questionnaire that was distributed immediately after the seminars and the third questionnaire sent one month after the intervention included questions that evaluated teachers 'satisfaction with the program, as well as questions about teachers' knowledge and attitudes .The methodology included the evaluation of the teachers' knowledge and the effectiveness of the educational part of the program. The statistical program SPSS 22.0 was used for the analysis.
RESULTS: The sample consists of 542 teachers with an average age of 44.2 years. The 81.5% of the participants were female and their work experience was 16.7 years. The 62.4% of the participants worked in elementary school. The 8.0% of the participants answered they had enough knowledge about epilepsy and 12.5% of teachers felt that they were prepared to handle an acute seizure at school. More than half of the participants (56.2%) had previously attended health seminars. The correct response rates before the intervention ranged from 25.0% to 91.1%. After the intervention, the rates of correct answers ranged from 81.7% to 94.8%. Specifically, the number of teachers who thought diazepam was designed to be performed by non-medical staff increased from 38.8% pre-intervention to 81.9% post intervention (p <0.001) and their belief that diazepam can place a hazard on the child's life decreased from 61.9% to 10.3% post intervention, (p <0.001). There was a significant increase in participants 'post-intervention score, indicating a significant increase in participants' knowledge of epilepsy. The average pre-intervention score was 9.93 (± 2.33), just after intervention 13.01 (± 1.12) and one month after 13.12 (± 0.86). The 88.8% of teachers believed that this seminar should be repeated and 96.8% would suggest it to other colleagues.
CONCLUSION: Providing a teaching session on epilepsy increased the teachers’ knowledge and willingness to act and reduced obsolete measures. However, it should be noted that further education not only of teachers but also of family members of children with epilepsy is always required.
