Summary:
The target of this specific presentation refers to the projection of the mid-class which constitutes in the capital of Achaia in the third quarter of the 19th century. The research is focused in Patra, which was one of the most important urban center in Greece. Due to the vast increase in demand of the raisin in the French market, Achaia experienced a tremendous economic growth, which was combined with the development of the mid-class. This social class, once having followed the European model, even though acquiring a different origin, developed a identical social image, the urban, which was influenced the economical, social and civilizational section of the town. Such an urban lifestyle is represented in this hereby research.
In the first part of this project, an attempt is made to verify the concept of urbanization throughout Europe likewise in Greece, so as to emerge the unique social characteristics of urban Patra. Furthermore, intense stress is placed on the presentation of the variations which contribute to all internal member of the urban class and signifying how these varied smaller counterparts which create a total social order. In the second section of the present project a demographic development of Patra is presented, revealing methods by which the increase of raisin carpus helped develop the population of Achaia’s capital city. In continuation, an extended reference of the economic skills of the elite classed in Patra. Initially, information is provided for the trading of the raisin which resulted into the main occupation of Patra’s residence. Directly after information is provided for the financial politics of inhabitants obtaining property, which were provided a safe environment. Following it is started that loansharking activities and the provision of loans which were provided to the lower social classes, methods which the higher classes facilitated from the 18th century. What’s more, index is provided concerning insurance policy. So as to promote worthy tactics, this research examines further important financial and insurance institutions of the town, which were the possession of the most wealthy local urban families. Later an detailed presentation of the Industrial Sector of Patra which flourished financially during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to the raisin crisis. Pioneers of such was the social class of this town. Finally, the reasons are presented which lead to the blight of Patra and the methods by which were followed to handle the raisin crisis. In the third part an attempt is made to appoint the cultural behavior of Patra’s urban class and the method used so as to promote the social group. Starting with the significant importance of their entertaining method and the dress code, likewise the education adopted by the civil residents. Simultaneously, activities of the clubs which were adapted by social classed, are presented, by providing image of charity attempts. Finally, reference is provided of the architecture of their houses and graves by which it was achieved as a index of their social status. In the final sector, a brief description of the most important civil families of Patra is stated which studies of their similarities are clarified.
