Foreign direct investments in Greece: The role of institutional framework
Summary:
The present thesis presents an analysis of the inflow of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Greece for the period 1996-2016 and of the role of institutional framework, which constitutes the environment of economic activity and can be either encouraging or discouraging from drawing foreign investments. The last years there has been a growing number of bibliography which focus on the quality of institutions that exist on a country, not only because they work as an appealing factor for Foreign Direct Investments, but also for their efficiency on the host country. Therefore, one of the purposes of this thesis, is to examine the role of the institutions in terms of attracting Foreign Direct Investments in Greece and how these two variables have been altered during the crisis.

Furthermore comparisons are made for both the inflow of FDI and also for the institutional context between Greece and the rest of the European Countries (Cyprus, Ireland, Portugal and Spain) that received funding from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Commission and the European Central Bank. This specific comparison shows clearly the adverse position of Greece and these countries, as well as the average of European Union’s countries. The low quality of the institutional environment in Greece, as this reflects on the Worldwide Governance Indicators published by the World Bank, but also the intertemporal low level of inflows of FDI, which is considered as a substantial factor for both economic growth and economic development, compose equally important reasons beyond the severity of the adjustment measures, for the long term staying in the adaptation program of the Memorandum
