Long term memory in Drosophila melanogaster
Summary:
PURPOSE: The purpose of this research was to study the role of a previous negative experience (isolation of a male with a fertilized individual female, for 8 hours in a limited space) in male's future courtship behavior, after exposure towards a virgin female. The experimental model Drosophila Melanogaster (wild type: Oregon-R) was used.
METHOD: Male flies were isolated in pairs (one male with one fertilized female) for 8 hours in a restricted area at ages of : 25, 50 and 60-65 days (depending on the experiment). Twenty-four hours later, the male's courtship behavior has been filmed with exposure of the trained male towards a virgin female(courtship assay).
RESULTS: At the age of 25 and 50 days, the courtship index of males (who had the negative experience) with virgin females did not show a statistically significant difference with that of males who had not have the previous negative experience. In contrast, males of 60-65 days show a very low courtship index.
CONCLUSIONS: At the age of 25 and 50 days the males do not remember the previous negative experience of courtship. Male 60-65 days show a low courtship index that may be low, either due to the memory formation or to their poor physical condition
