Summary:
During pregnancy, delivery and post-partum anatomic changes take place in multiple systems of the body. Additional, the chances of having a mental disorder are increased. Postpartum psycological disorders are divided into three categories with increasing severity: 1) postpartum blues 2) postpartum depression and 3) postpartum psychosis.
Postpartum blues is the mildest and most common psychopathological manifestation that occurs shortly after delivery.
Postpartum depression and psychosis are serious disorders which may lead to life threatening complications of both mother and child.
The treatment of postpartum depression is no different from the treatment of other depressions. It includes medication, psychotherapy support to the daily activities of the mother and especially those related to the baby care.
The treatment of postpartum psychosis proposed is a combination of drugs neuroleptics, antidepressants and lithium.
