Mindfulness-based interventions to patients with Multiple Sclerosis
Summary:
Introduction: The last few years, mindfulness has emerged both to the field of medicine and psychology. A large body of literature, indicates that mindfulness based interventions, ameliorate in a variety of both physical and mental conditions. Multiple Sclerosis is a complex disease of the Central Nervous System that has consequences to the patient’s physical and psychological health.
Aim: To investigate mindfulness-based interventions’ efficacy to patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis.
Method: A review of existing literature, was conducted to PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases, between May and August 2018. The inclusion criteria were a) studies involving adult patients with Multiple Sclerosis, b) articles published in English, c) randomized controlled trials or controlled trials and d) mindfulness based interventions.
Results: Of the 176 articles identified, 12 studies were included in this systematic review. The majority of them, indicates the efficacy of mindfulness based interventions to Multiple Sclerosis patients’ quality of life, perceived stress, depression, fatigue, anxiety and pain.
Conclusions: Mindfulness based interventions, seem to have salutary effects to Multiple Sclerosis’ patients. However, these results, should be treated with caution, due to the small sample size, the lack of comparison with active psychotherapeutic interventions, and the assessments held by using self-report measures. Further research should be conducted with larger sample sizes, in order to safely generalize the results.
