Small Clauses in Modern Greek
Summary:
In this thesis I discuss small clauses (SC) in Modern Greek. As SCs have been the object of research only during the last decades, I analyze some basic matters. First of all, it is proved that SCs actually exist and form a constituent. Another matter that is discussed is the structures they create; a) internally; it is concluded that they behave as IPs/TPs and b) externally in relation to the verb of the clause, where they may be a complement, an adjunct or even the subject. Moreover, the distinction between predicational inverted and equative structures is studied, with the existence of the second being illusory. Finally, two Greek verbs are also discussed, namely "apoðiknio" (prove) and "anaɣnorizo" (recognize) and it is proved that the alternation of their argumentative structure leads to different types of action.
