Summary:
Corporate Social Responsibility is aiming at ensuring that firms conduct their
business activities in an ethical way, taking into account their social, economic and
environmental impact, and human rights as well. CSR can involve a wide range of
activities. Some of them are the collaboration with local communities, Social
responsible investments, the development of relationships with employees and
customers and the environmental protection and sustainability. More and more
employees, customers and governments’ bodies are demanding for businesses to be
more open about their activities and the way they reach and maintain acceptable
standards. On the other hand, for employers, CSR can be seen as a notable way to
gain competitive advantage, protect and raise brand awareness and built trust with
employees and customers. In the first theoretical part of this dissertation, the
definition, the historical background and other relative terms and theories will be
analyzed. In the second practical part, the CSR practices of two major Greek banks:
National Bank of Greece and Alpha Bank will be presented. Their evaluation and
comparison showed that the two banks follow a identical CSR practices pattern, with
adequate success as they refer. Some suggestions to be made are the more often
publication of Annual CSR report, particularly by National Bank of Greece and a
possible collaboration between the banks providing that the market is market is
relative small and problematic.
