Banal Nationalism in Greek-cypriot Television
Summary:
The world as we know it today, is divided in nation – states, entities that are combinations of symbols, beliefs, discourses, traditions and shared ways of lives. According to Billig (1995), the variables that define each nation, exist in everyday life as silent, emotionless reminders of the citizens’ national roots. Unlike however any emotional and ‘hot’ expressions of nationality, the banal reminders, are embedded in everyday life in a silent, almost unnoticed way. This thesis aimed to examine the expressions of such banal reminders in the Greek – Cypriot community of Cyprus. Using the daily TV comedies as a ‘window’ to the Cypriot everyday life, this thesis recorded the most common expression of banal nationalism which also allowed a conversation about the ideological duality found in Cyprus (the coexistence of a Greek – centric and Cypro- centric ideology) and the normality of that duality.
