Summary:
This master thesis presents the development of new technologies based on optical fibers, which contribute to the development of technology both in the field of telecommunications networks and in of the economy. The goal of this thesis is to study and compare
the construction of GPON networks for FTTH and FTTB-G.fast architectures in the area of Philopappou, an area of the center of Athens, where the expansion of the fiber optic network has already begun.
In the first chapter a reference is made to global statistics on optical fiber pervasion predominantly in advanced countries. The reasons that deem the development of broadband networks and the use of new technologies necessary are demonstrated, followed by the
presentation of FTTx networks and their advantages.
In the second chapter, wired broadband technologies are analyzed. Particular emphasis is placed on the GPON networks, and FTTB networks using G.fast technology are subsequently described in detail.
The third chapter presents the equipment that is required both externally and internally for the network. The architecture and structure of the networks are described and records of the buildings and apartments that will be supported by the cabin placement at a specific location in the area of Filopappou are cited in detail. The comparison is made for a building that represents the average of
Philopappou’s dwellings, considering that it has
developed FTTH network for the first case and FTTB-G.fast for the second case of comparison.
Finally, a detailed cost estimation of equipment is presented for both of these cases.
