Outcome of patients after radiofrequency ablation
Summary:
Introduction: In the present day, the resolution through radiofrequency ablation, after being used for more than 20 years in the treatment of arrhythmia, has replace the traditional medication has been a treatment of choice, for a number of different tachycardia issues.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the patients’ outcome after a cardiac radiofrequency ablation.
Material and size: The study sample consists of 88 patients who were submitted to arrhythmia resolution in the electrophysics laboratory of the Bioclinic of Athens, in the years 2012-2014. All data were retrieved from the medical records of the electrophysiocs laboratory of the Bioclinic of Athens. For statistical analysis of the data, version 22 of the statistical package SPSS was used and the statistical test x2-test was applied. The importance level was set to <0.05.
Result: Of the 88 people, that constituted the study sample, 50.0% were male. The sample’s age was under 50 years old, 46.6% of the time, and from 50 to 65 years old for the rest 53.4%. A 36.4% of the patients suffered from atrial fibrillation, 45.5% of the patients suffered from atrioventricular nodal re-entral tachycardia (AVNRT) and atrioventricular re-entral tachycardia (AVRT) and the 18.2% suffered from other kinds of supraventricular or ventricular tachycardia.
Of the above, 40.8% of the patients mention an escort disease, like coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, heart failure etc.
69.2% had some sort of treatment of arrhythmia in the past, of which 63.6% was receiving some kind of medication (antiarrhythmics- antithrombotics). The rest 36.4% had undergone electrical cardio version.
More frequently, recurrence was reported by patients being of age greater than 50 years old, p=0.012, patients who suffered from atrial fibrillation, p=0.002 and patients that had been ailing with escort diseases, p=0.008. No apparent correlation was discovered between recurrence and smoking, p=0.218, alcohol, p=0.176, number of cigarettes per day, p=0.261, the daily alcohol consumption, p=0.093, family history, p=0.073 or occurrence of arrhythmia, p=0.494.
Conclusion: The rate of arrhythmia recurrence is related to age, escort diseases, kind of arrhythmia and the previous treatment methods. Relapse of arrhythmia is significantly more frequent in patients who had been submitted to atrial fibrillation. Those findings have already been presented in studies, conducted and published both in Greece and in other countries. The relapse rate and serious complications seem to be declining over the years, thanks to the knowledge and multiyear experience of electro physiologist as well as the evolution of technology in mapping systems.
