Professional Satisfaction And Quality Of Working Life Of Greek Nurses In Pediatric Hospitals
Summary:
Introduction: Professional satisfaction affects the quality and the effectiveness of health services provided to patients. Various factors related to the work environment affect both satisfaction and quality of working life of pediatric nurses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate professional satisfaction and the factors affecting it, as well as to assess the quality of working life of pediatric nurses.
Material and Method: Nurses working at two public Pediatric Hospitals in Athens (n= 176) were the sample of the study. "Measure of Job Satisfaction" and "The ProQOL 5" were used to collect the data. The scales were applied after receiving hospital permission.
Results: The majority of the sample was women (n=161) mainly of a three-year nursing education (n =147). The results of the study showed that 45.4% of the participants were generally satisfied with their work. Satisfaction with salary was the highest category of dissatisfaction (55.9%). The factors that appeared to affect the professional satisfaction of nurses were age (p = 0.049), unit (p = 0.041), work experience (p <0.05) and marital status (p = 0.034). Nurses, despite their high compassion satisfaction, experience modest levels of compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress. Pearson's correlation index revealed a positive correlation (r=0.462) between the "burnout" and "secondary traumatic stress" variables.
